From the moment I first got asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I knew my future would involve working with kids in some way, shape, or form. I would invite all the neighborhood kids over, set up a ‘school’ in the basement and play ‘school.’ I spent all of my summers as a teenager babysitting. Then, as I decided on where I wanted to go to college, I knew there was no other option besides elementary education. While in college, I enjoyed things like working at the campus daycare, volunteering with big brothers / big sisters, and babysitting on the side. I ended up graduating with a double major in Elementary Education and Special Education, and a minor in communications. Summers in college were spent working at a preschool, while there I got certified in early childhood education and really discovered my love for the little ones. Post graduation, I taught for a few years and absolutely loved every part of being with the kids, but started to strongly dislike all the other parts of being in a school classroom. One summer, I got offered an opportunity to nanny for one of my students. After that, my nanny career skyrocketed. After that summer ended, I decided instead of going back in the classroom, I was going to find a different, more long term nanny job. I absolutely fell in love with the career of nannying. I love being able to see the direct impact that you’re making not only on the childs’ life, but also how you’re making the parents life easier in the process. I saw firsthand, the trust that it takes for someone to leave you with their child. I got to travel with families, think of fun / engaging ways to teach a child outside of a classroom, go on a million field trips, and watch kids become such great human beings in the process. It truly became my livelihood. In the process, I met a ton of nannies and a ton of families, and a common question would pop up every now and then - ‘do you know of any great nannies looking for a job?’ or vis versa - ‘do you know of any great families looking for a nanny?’ Nannies have to leave, even great families, for numerous reasons, and those great families are left scrambling trying to figure out how in the world they will find someone that is just as amazing, that they trust as much. On the other hand, I discovered how hard nannies have to advocate for themselves to get great pay and benefits, and I found such a passion along the way.
